Culture is Downstream from Commerce: The Importance of Conscious Consumerism
Our purchasing decisions have a significant impact on the culture and politics of our society. When we buy a product or support a business, we are indirectly contributing to the values and principles that these businesses uphold. This, in turn, can influence the culture of our society, which can then influence political action.
In recent years, there has been a growing movement of conscious consumers who are voting with their wallets. These consumers are choosing to support businesses that align with their values, and they are boycotting businesses that do not. This movement is having a real impact on the culture and politics of our society.
For example, in 2023, the company Bud Light ran an ad that featured a transgender woman. This ad was met with a great deal of backlash from consumers who felt that it was promoting transgenderism. As a result, Bud Light pulled the ad and issued an apology. This is just one example of how conscious consumerism can influence the culture of our society.
*Another example is from right here in Albion Michigan. There was a popular restaurant established at the Bohm Theatre, but it was protested and because of that they left the location. Why aren't those people that protested not doing that to other businesses here in town? What about that restaurant did they not like?
It is important to remember that it is not enough to simply abstain from supporting businesses that do not align with our values. We must also actively support businesses that do align with our values. This support can be as dynamic as you want. Think of MORE ways to support these businesses you align with. Promote them and their message How can you direct business to them locally? By doing this, we can send a powerful message that we want to see a change in the culture of our society.
The internet has made it easier than ever to find businesses that share our values. There are now websites and social media groups that can help us connect with like-minded consumers and businesses. This makes it easier for us to make conscious purchasing decisions that support the causes that we "believe" in.
In addition to supporting businesses that share our values, we can also support small local businesses. These businesses are often more likely to share the values of their communities, and they can help to strengthen the local economy.
Conscious consumerism is a powerful tool that we can use to shape the culture and politics of our society. By making conscious purchasing decisions, we can send a message that we want to see a change in the world.
